Designed for a beautiful, natural-looking appearance, veneers can be an excellent option for concealing a variety of cosmetic dental imperfections. Dr. Brian Hirschfield and Dr. Devan Berry offer porcelain veneers at our Lakeville, NY, practice and can easily determine your candidacy during a visit to our office.
An Introduction to Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers are thin shells made from dental-grade porcelain that are bonded to the front of a patient’s teeth. Veneers can be used for a variety of cosmetic applications since they look very similar to natural teeth. The restorations can be placed on just one misshapen tooth or applied to all the teeth that are visible when you smile.
Are You a Candidate?
In order to determine if you are a good candidate for porcelain veneers, your doctor will evaluate your current dental health and the condition of your tooth enamel, as well as review your health history. In addition to good oral and overall health, good candidates need to be aware that the process is permanent and be committed to practicing proper oral hygiene.
Patients who are interested in dental veneers may have:
- Teeth that are slightly misaligned
- Small gaps in their smile
- Cracked or chipped teeth
- Discoloration that does not respond to whitening
If you have oral health issues such as cavities or gum disease, you will first need to undergo treatment with Dr. Hirschfield or Dr. Berry. If you grind your teeth, you may not be able to get veneers as grinding can place excessive pressure on your teeth, which can crack the veneers.
You should also be aware that veneers usually need to be either replaced in about 10 years, or you will need choose a different restorative procedure. In order for your veneers to last as long as possible, you should attend routine dental exams and cleanings and practice good oral hygiene at home.
The Veneers Procedure
After you and your doctor have decided that dental veneers are a good option for you, two appointments will be needed to complete the procedure. At the first appointment, Dr. Hirschfield or Dr. Berry will work conservatively to remove a very thin layer of your tooth enamel, and then take impressions of your teeth. This impression will be sent to the high-quality dental lab that we use for fabrication of our restorations.
Porcelain veneers are a high-quality, natural-looking option to conceal several types of cosmetic imperfections that detract from a beautiful smile.
In about two weeks, once your veneers have been received at our practice, you will return for your second appointment. Your doctor will apply a solution and lightly etch your teeth in order to allow the bonding material to securely adhere to your teeth. Then he will place dental cement on the back of the veneers and attach the restorations to your teeth. Using a special light, your doctor will cure the cement to create a durable bond. Finally, he will make any adjustments that are necessary to ensure your bite is not affected.
