Dental Phobia Is More Common Than You Think
You have options when it comes to sedation dentistry...
Types of Sedation Dentistry
Dr. Hirschfield offers three types of sedation at our Lakeville, NY, dental practice: nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and intravenous (IV) sedation. When you arrive for a consultation, we will review each option and determine which one is right for you based on your dentistry needs, your level of anxiety, and your budget.
In addition to local anesthesia, which numbs the treatment site, we offer:

Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, is a type of sedative inhaled through a gas mask. The dentist can control the amount of laughing gas you receive, and while you will not lose consciousness, you will be highly relaxed. Nitrous oxide wears off quickly and you should feel back to normal within an hour after your dental procedure.

Oral Sedation
If you choose oral sedation, we will prescribe an anti-anxiety medication in pill form. You will take the medication before arriving at our office to ensure a comfortable visit from start to finish. The strength of medication will be carefully determined based on your weight and your level of anxiety. With oral conscious sedation, you will still be able to answer questions and respond to direction. Since any form of sedation causes drowsiness, you will need to have a family member or friend drive you to and from your appointment.

Intravenous Sedation
With IV sedation, we will administer medications directly to the bloodstream to help you remain at ease. In many cases, we recommend IV sedation because it allows Dr. Hirschfield to adjust medication levels throughout the course of treatment. Dr. Hirschfield has completed more than 90 hours of specialized education on IV sedation and received certification from the state of New York, making him one of the most well-trained sedation dentists in the Lakeville, NY, area. We can also use intravenous techniques to provide general anesthesia, during which patients are completely unconscious.
Are there any reasons I wouldn't qualify for sedation dentistry?

Read What Our Patients Have to Say... "I Was a Little Worried about This Procedure but Did Not Need to Be"
I love this practice and have been a patient since 1985. I am comfortable with both Dr. Hirschfield and Dr. Brenda. They are amazing dentist. The hygienist are always friendly and do an amazing job taking care of your teeth. The front desk staff is always friendly and smiling. As much as anyone can enjoy going to the dentist I do I would recommend this office and practice to anyone!

We Encourage Patients to Plan Ahead
The aftereffects will vary widely depending on the type of sedative you receive. While the effects of nitrous oxide fade quickly, the effects of oral sedation or IV sedation will usually linger for several hours.
It is best to be well-informed about what to expect and any possible complications so that patients can plan ahead.

Potential Side Effects
Drowsiness
You can expect to be a little drowsy after receiving any sedative.
Blurred Vision
Some patients experience temporarily blurry vision, which can make driving and other daily tasks more dangerous.
Lack of Concentration
It is typical for patients to be less alert due to sedatives. You may experience problems concentrating or following instructions.
Impaired Hand-Eye Coordination
You shouldn't drive or operate machinery if you are experiencing any lingering side effects. If you opt for sedation dentistry, plan ahead to have someone take you home after your dental procedure.
How can I make sure sedation dentistry is safe for me?
